I upgraded a htpc from 10.04 to 11.04 yesterday. All was quick and painless. One prompt for updating a conf file. Then goes to reboot. Errrrror no display. The connected tv does not have the resolution for the grub screen so can not pick alt kernel to boot.  Connecting into ssh I saw that when loading nvidia module says no display and fails to start X11. Try to fix for a little then pass on that project for the night. While at work ran updates on my notebook. I saw there was a kernel update but didn’t think much of it. These updates produce the same results at htpc at home 🙁 I was able to boot into 2.6.38-10 on the notebook from grub. Worst week in my use of OSS. Now have two systems to repair.

I was in the market for a mid sized notebook.  The netbook is still running strong, but the atom processor and 8.9 Inch screen doesn’t cut it.  The think that I needed the most is a FULL size shift key / keyboard. After having such success with my ASUS Netbook I felt that it would be safe to stick with the same brand.  Finding the UL80JT I make a quick decision on purchasing it.  Its specs seemed solid… a  i3 processor, 4gb of ddr3 ram, 500gb HDD, hdmi out, 10hr battery.  The thing that I was partially worried about was the dual video controllers. With the computer having both Intel and a NVIDIA GeForce 310M i figured it was safer this route than the Intel / ATI option when it comes to running Linux.
